How To Become (Or Find) An Awesome Vinyasa Yoga Teacher

8 Aug

Certainly this year I have been doing a lot of work on myself and watching my teaching soar from the work I’ve done with Live Love Teach.  So naturally when I saw a class scheduled at Wanderlust called “From Adequate to Awesome” for teacher’s only with Schuyler Grant, I signed up.  I’m not surprised to hear that Schuyler thinks there are so many adequate 200 hr vinyasa teachers, but it stops there.  She says so many yoga schools are sphewing out 200 hr teachers but it’s rare to find an exceptional teacher.  She thinks one of the reasons might be that many vinyasa teachers have never even taken an Ashtanga class.  She thinks whether you are an Ashtangi practitioner or not, as a vinyasa teacher, one should at least be familiar with the primary series because it is the foundation of vinyasa. I’d have to agree.

Here’s some other tips on what you can do to become an awesome teacher (or if you’re a student, look for these traits in your vinyasa/flow teacher):

1.  Study other styles frequently because regurgitated vinyasa is boring.  Study Iyenger, Anusara, Kundalini, etc… bring these elements into the flow class.  Steal and steal away from other teachers.

2. Teach from your own experience.  As you experience other classes, put it into your own personality instead of being a parrot and regurgitating those yogic catch phrases that are being said over and over by every teacher. Does it have meaning?

3. Be clear and concise with your words.   You can be poetic in your conversation, but try not to use “ing” words.  For example, “reaching your left arm up, stepping your right foot forward…”  Be direct and say what you  mean.

4. Listen to your own words.  No mushy words and no sexy, zen like yoga voice.

5. Focus on a theme:  use it as a container with a beginning, middle, and end.

6. The rhythm and tempo of the class is balanced and not jerky.

7. Vinyasa is a breathing system, a way to connect breath, mind, and body.  Are you connecting breath to movement?  Is there breath in the class?

8. If you practice while teaching, it’s lazy teaching or remedial.  If you’re practicing the whole time while you’re teaching, you’re not present for the class.  All your brain energy is in your own body.  Are you in “doing” mode rather than “being” mode.

9. If you’re not present, then how can you give appropriate adjustments (physically or verbally)?

10.  To be an awesome teacher, you must cultivate a home practice.  Experience what you teach in your own body.

11.  Using music is a cheat.  Although music can be fun, do you use it to hide behind?  Music can be distracting and it can become more powerful than you as a teacher.  Do you want them to come for your playlist or what you offer as a teacher? Do you give enough space and silence?  Does space and silence make you uncomfortable?

12. Speak to the student’s body as you see it.

13.  Have fun!

Awesome list!  But I already knew all that :) .   Live Love Teach ingrained these in me and then some. If you’re feeling exhausted after teaching a class, you are not stepping into your awesomeness.  Chances are you are trying too hard and missing one or more items on this list. But there’s more that Schuyler has not added that will make teaching fun and rewarding instead of feeling like “work.”

I don’t like to advertise here, but I must because I believe in the work.  Many teachers ask me how I could ever teach 17 classes a week and deliver consistently awesome classes while balancing out everything else in my life.   There’s nothing more encouraging to me than hearing other people say to me, “I want your life.”  And I want you to experience full joy and have endless energy in your teaching.  Come with me to Montana with the Live Love Teach team on September 11 – 15, 2011.  I will be co-facilitating it with two other fabulous teachers and our three mentors.  You will get the opportunity to put all of these skills (and then some more secrets to awesomeness) into action and step up from being adequate some of the time to being AWESOME all of the time!

Ok that’s it on the high horse… if you’re a student, demand these from your teachers.  Give them honest feedback.  Help them grow because when your teachers grow, so do you!

Post Wanderlust 2011: Letting It All Hang

4 Aug

My very first class was with Schuyler Grant, one of the founders of Wanderlust.  I was super excited because I took this class last year and loved it so much it was the inspiration behind my uddiyana video.  What I loved even more than the way she presents the technicalities of how to do uddiyana is the permission we need to give ourselves to “let it all hang out…”  She’s talking about the gut, bellies, muffin tops, or whatever identity you’ve given to your mid-section.  The key to creating the abdominal vacuum for uddiyana bandha is to RELAX the belly.. letting it all hang out.

Believe it or not, it’s a difficult thing to do.  Do you walk around letting your belly drop?  Probably not!  We walk around sucking it in, holding it firm, wishing we had flatter bellies and firmer bodies.   I’ve been there still wishing I could get rid of my left over belly from having two kids.  There’s nothing wrong with a harder, firmer, leaner body.  In fact it probably feels good to be that fit but at what expense?   Only you can know the emotional damage that occurs from your desires for such a body.

The golden nugget I walked away from the Wanderlust weekend is this simple idea that Schuyler said, “outer body soft, inner body strength.”  This is true for my own practice and what I try to teach in a power yoga class pairing  strength with ease and grace with power.  “Drop the shoulders, uncross the brows, relax your face, and smile,” are often cues in my class.  I believe if we could just relax in our bodies, we will find the right alignment for our poses.   I’m not gonna lie and say I never tell students to “suck in your belly, engage your core, hug it in tight, and you’ll never walk out of my class without getting a good “core” work out.

Is it possible to have a strong core/inner strength without a 6 pack belly?  I think so.  I’ve seen so many flat bellies out there but are they really strong?  Some can barely do a chaturanga (physically).  Some can barely do a chaturanga and worse,  they think they’ll never be able to do one.  Do you think these people are strong?  On the flip side, I’ve seen pump, big boned, santa clause bellied students get into poses that size zeros have yet to experience.  Hmmm what’s the difference?

It’s all about attitude, intentions, and how YOU perceive your body.  Do I still want a flatter belly? It would be nice to lose the extra flap, but it doesn’t matter.  In fact I feel much stronger now than I did before I had kids and had a very nicely toned belly.  A strong core physically helps relieve my back pain, straightens my posture, and makes everyday movements easier.  However, when I’m doing “core work,” I’m actually training my body to soften it’s perspective on what a flatter belly looks like.  When I’m relaxed, I can strengthen the actual core muscles without hardening up my face, grunting out loud, shrugging my shoulders, or the worse is calling myself unkind names.  I know inner strength is much more stronger than a 6 pack.

I was very happy to see a sprinkle of different sizes and shapes at Wanderlust… although those 6 packers make for very good eye candy ;)

Post Wanderlust 2011: Do I Belong?

3 Aug

I’m home now.  As much as I wanted to post live while at Wanderlust, I could not put into words or what I call a “brain dump” into a post.   If I were to describe my experience the second time in a few words it would be: sensory overload.  So much to see, so much to absorb, so much to experience, so much of everything from people, yoga, retail, trees, sky, wind, sun…

When I attended last year, I was with my friend.  She helped me stay grounded… or rather secure because I was with someone I knew.  I had my posse.  We immersed in the whole thing from the yoga, music, shopping, sun bathing, eating, chilling, etc.  It’s no wonder I felt dizzy and exhausted when I got back.

This year, when I arrived for my first class, I felt a bit of unease.  Walking through the festival grounds and watching people arrive with their posse, I remember the “groups, clicks, tribes” that come together and I can’t help but think “am I going to belong?”

I’m not a cow girly type girl:

Nor am I a hula hooper:

Or an aerial silk rope dancer:

or a slacking yogi, and I most certainly don’t have a 6 pack to show off:

slackline yoga

and feathers will probably make me sneeze:

the only feathers I knew were feathered hair styles in 7th grade

bohemian, hippie chick, boho style?… I don’t think so

so not me

and as big of a Kula as John Friend has, he’s missing at least one:

Yoga with a stick?  Only for guys says Demetrios who is trying to promote this prop:

interesting to watch and that’s about it…

As you can see, you can feel lost amongst the crowd and the styles of yoga out there. I’ve recently stepped out of my own idea of my yoga tribe and dabbled in classes and teachers I would not normally take… I’ve become a yoga mutt.  It feels good.  Some classes were good.  Some were, ‘uh!  definitely not my teacher.’  And some were, ‘wow! adding him/her to my list of favs.’

As I found what teachers/classes brought me joy, I also realized that just because I didn’t resonate with a particular yoga or teacher, I can still find a sense of belonging… a realization that I don’t need to belong to a particular group, yoga, or get googly-eyed star chasing after a celebriyogi.

I was content ‘people watching.’  I realized how often I gaze outwards, how often I depend on external forces/influences/things/people to feel a sense of belonging… you know like high school all over again, except it never ended.

So how does one belong in such an eclectic environment?

I’m grateful for Wanderlust for providing such a stimulating environment.  All the things, people, music, and yoga were just all tools to challenge me to look inside and stay inside.  It was a beautiful weekend… and I’ll continue to brain dump here this week :)

Countdown to Wanderlust 2011

23 Jul

At this time next weekend, I will be surrounded by yogis, trees, blue skies, sunshine, and music to my ears.  Yea, “lucky me” is absolutely right!  Not to rub it in your face, but I’ve been super lucky this summer with all the mini-yoga-cations.   Don’t worry though, I will be sharing a bit of Wanderlust with you here because as luck would be good to me, Wanderlust sent me this very cool digital recorder:

DXG Twist

This cute little contraption just came out earlier this year in February.  If you’re interested, check the specs.   It looks like a smart phone but has a swivel screen that is bigger than my flip video.  Goodbye flip!   Now I have no more excuse to not make more videos.

I’m most excited about taking Schuyler Grant’s uddiyana bandha class again.  Remember my uddiyana video?  I learned it from Schuyler.  Love her!!!  The other ‘can’t wait for’ classes include toe socks queen, Kathryn Budig, and meditation with Demetri Velisarius, a buddhist meditation teacher.  And finally, yoga twister is a definite ‘must record’ for you guys.

Can’t wait to share these fun times with you.  Hope you’re having a great time where ever you are and can’t wait to see some of you readers at the festival too!  Who else is going?

My Not Bummer Summer

10 Jul

The best thing about hanging with kids is going to rated G movies and not feeling out of place.  I admit… I am a big cheese ball.  Back in the day before we had kids, I actually talked my hubby to take me to Toy Story Disney on Ice.  We were newly married and had just moved to a new town.  We did anything to get out and explore the town.  Little did we know that Disney on Ice performances were geared for families with kids.  I think we were the only ones in our section without kids.  So to not feel out of place, I begged for a snow cone in a character mug, cotton candy and glow in the dark bracelets.

Fast forward two kids later and it seems the only movies and shows I attend are rated G.   A few days ago, we went to go see Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer.  It was cheesy.  It was corny.  Any adult would roll their eyes and take the kids to see this movie only to fall asleep.  I actually liked it.

Many of the kiddo’s friends were all going on big family vacations to India, Italy, Disneyland, Hawaii… and mine were going to be stuck at home.  Well.. that was according to me.  The kiddos didn’t see it like that at all.  They are content going to amusement parks, picnics, swimming, and hanging out with me.

A part of me almost felt guilty for leaving them at home while I enjoyed myself in Italy last week but before I spoiled my joy, I remember that it’s not about where we go for the summer, but how we choose to spend our days.  Judy Moody summed it up great in her super duper double dare summer vacation movie.

Wanderlust California

July 28 - 31

My next summer adventure is Wanderlust at Squaw Valley, Lake Tahoe.  This time the family is coming with.  I’m so excited for the kids to see Michael Franti and MC Yogi.  They love their songs.     After attending last year, I thought I would just do a day tripper, but wow! Wanderlust has made it irresistible.   For starters, more guided hikes, teachers only classes, more films, wine, local and organic food, charity and yoga aid challenge and meditation.  I remember how physically drained I was last year from 4 yoga classes a day.  This time, I will dabble myself in all areas.. not just vinyasa classes.  I’m really looking forward to yoga twister…. I could feel the belly laughs already…. and of course will be sharing them with you :)    Stay tuned…

Any of you readers going?  I’m also very excited to meet Y is for Yogini and hanging out with old friends too!!!

What are you doing this summer?

Last Day in Europe

3 Jul

Hallo!  (no that’s not a mispelling).  Here’s the last 10 minutes left in Amsterdam before boarding.

As much as I didn’t want to leave Italy, I am ready to go home… back to familar signs, faces, and yoga!

With a 6 hour layover in Amsterdam, I braved up and went out to venture by myself.  You can say I looked like a lost tourist with my camera across my chest and a waist pack (a very cute one :)   Checked my bags at the airport and took the train out to Central station.

Central station was interesting.   People everywhere!  People lugging their suitcases everywhere.  And people on bikes everywhere.  It was definitely sensory overload from the flock of people to looking for signs to trying to admire the beautiful buildings all while trying to not get run over by a bike or catch a sniff of whatever people smoked here.  Hmmm…

I sat at a small cafe and had this very simple and yummy dutch pancake with chicken and cheese.

I have 7 minutes left on my free wifi before boarding so enjoy these pics from Amsterdam I took from the canal ride :)

Can’t wait to get home!!!

Italy: Another Year Older and Happier

1 Jul

The hardest part about turning 35 was being away from my family on my birthday yesterday.  “Happy Birthday” via skype is not quite the same especially since it sounded more like “ha-pee-ay-er-duh-ay” since the internet connection was slower than two Italian beetles doing the funky… ok so two beetles weren’t doing the funky but one Italian beetle was trying to court my friend all week.

Italy: Hearts Make Lousy Followers

29 Jun

A few days ago, Debbie says “don’t follow your heart, lead with it” while we were in dancer’s pose.  I could feel my shoulders and their blades immediately shift down and into my back.  I feel much more open, much more taller, and much more confident in my posture.  I can breathe.  I can feel my heart beat.  From this space I can expand with much clarity.  But I think she meant something much more deeper than just a physical shift.

If you ask me how I chose to marry the love of my life, I would say I followed my heart.  If you ask me how I choose my career as a software engineer, I would say I followed my heart.  If you ask me how I choose my career as a yoga teacher, I would say I followed my heart.  Or rather a more appropriate thing to ask is how I finally stopped following my heart and started to create how I wanted to live my life.

I love my life as a yoga teacher and soon to be studio owner.  I get to travel the world and meet all sorts of interesting people.  I make my own schedule and I get to wear stretchy pants all day!!!  As I look back, if I continued to follow my heart while I was a software engineer, I would probably still be sitting behind a computer day dreaming about becoming a yoga teacher.  Now I sit behind a computer and write about my adventures!  As for the marriage… if I continued to follow my heart, we would’ve probably been divorced a long time ago, but just like any dream, a relationship needs both hearts to co-create their life together.

When faced with a life decision, your heart does one of two things:  it’s flushed with emotion and hopes of manifesting what you dream of or it stops gazing out the window, dreaming of what appears to be impractical little dreams and instead takes charge and creates the dream right before your eyes.

Drowning and Tagging in Italy

Ciao!

It’s been another interesting day here in Italy.  My post today is on Debbie’s site.  Definitely click the link if you want some belly laughs:   Drowning in Italy, Part 1

Italy: Breaking My Balls in Florence

27 Jun

We are learning so much in the Yoga Life Coaching Retreat with Debbie this week.  From practicing how to be an active listener, supporting each other, overcoming fears on the mat and in our lives to learning how to say “You’re breaking my balls!” in Italian, the second day has been nothing short of amazing!

Today was a very early day starting off with breakfast at 6am and I had to “work” while eating breakfast because we were leaving for a day trip to Florence.  This is my office:

The view from my office

Yes! I’m eating cake for breakfast!  Florence is a beautiful city.  Here’s a look from the top:

Florence, Italy

When we went down into the town, I was suprised to see how calm everything was.  People everywhere!  But there was no chaos.  The atmosphere was so chill and relaxing… slow going.  Even my hairs seem to be growing slower as I didn’t have to shave this morn! (OK.. TMI)

I think I’ve eaten more today than I do in a week… I don’t know how these people stay in shape.  Here’s the parade of food that kept coming out during lunch:

the first few courses: bruschetta, some barley salad, and bread salad

this was my favorite dish

wine wine wine and we were whining about how much food we were eating

the most "melt in your mouth" fresh ricotta cheese I've EVER eaten!

followed by a lentil like tomato soup

followed by ravioli with some very delicious veggie sautee type thing

... and we thought the ravioli was the main dish, but this came out.. chicken cacciatore

then of course desert... vanilla icecream with the most juiciest blue berries I've ever eaten!

... and the grand finale of lunch, I promise this is the last picture from lunch: biscotti. yum! yum! yum!

Needless to say, I had food coma on the drive back to the palace.  But it continues with Life Coaching sessions.

I have an assignment for you to do:

1. Give yourself a hug.  Wrap your warms around yourself and squeeze yourself.  Even sway from side to side and say a nice affirmation.  Notice how you feel.

2. After that, go give just one other person a hug (a few more if you’re adventurous).  Wrap your warms around them tight and tuck your head in.  Hug like you mean it.  Hold for a while.  Notice how you feel.

3.  Can you tell me the difference in your being from #1 and #2?  Please share in comments if you wish.

Of course after the sessions, we practiced and you guessed it…. DINNER!  This was just 4 hours after the previous feast.  And what a dinner!

What's on the menu

The spinach balls.... I'm still craving this now!

Ok I change my mind.. I'd love to have another of these zucchini plates. So simple. So fresh. So incredibly delish!

Broccoli quiche

ok.. I change my mind again... this chocolate cake was oozing with warm goodness and the yogurt it swam in was OMG!

catching the last bit of tonight's sunset after dinner, yoga, and yoga nidra

And the most memorable thing about today:  si sta rompendo le palle  (take a wild guess what that means LOL)

I think this was a Replica of David di Michelangelo

Stay tuned for more juicy (not in a food kinda way) posts this week…

Nighty night….  I look forward to reading your replies on your hug assignment :)
